 Re: If you were Ling.....

I would give Ellis about 5 more minutes after Monday to consider his contract offer and look for a replacement. Like others, I would be more than happy if we could get MacDonald in for next season. I would try as hard as I could to keep Lathrope, but would expect he might go if Luton win the Conference play-off. And I would resign myself to the fact that if Swindon want Eunan, then that might be the only way we would get Bodin. After that, look for a Bobby replacement.

3,600 isn't crap if you consider 1) the game was on Sky (and I'm sorry, but it's far cheaper to stay at home and watch on the TV than fork out another whack for a ticket, especially if you factor in things like travel, food and drink, and the first leg), 2) it was on a Thursday night, which made it difficult for exiles, and 3) Cheltenham only brought about 600

Effectively it was 3,000 Torbayers and South Devonians, which is actually pretty impressive

One of the best posts I've ever read on here rosskaniuk - well done ML, the players and staff - a really good season from a great little club ! Keep running the club this way, within our limits but always with hope. Here's to next season !

Take a bow the 3,000 there
« Result #4 Yesterday at 10:08pm »

One feeling I did take away from Plainmoor on Thursday was that all those fans who were there should take a bow.
Not only did they not sit watching it on TV, but the support was amazing.
They cheered and cheered from first minute to last, and "yellow army" echoed round 10 minutes beyond. Yes, a misplaced pass or mistake - err, Man City make them too - obviously drew quiet sighs of frustration or disappointment, but no-one around me ever turned to knocking any player rather than urging on the team (no doubt there were a few somewhere but they would have been in a very small minority).
And even as the minutes ticked away, the ground never fell silent, which is in stark contrast to Shrewsbury's fans when we took our 2-0 lead there last year. Yes, they were loud before kick-off, but soon gave the feeling that they'd given up with a pained near silence.
The Plainmoor backing was far better than Cheltenham's at their place, where just a group of kids in a corner made much noise, until they got a bit excited by their second goal and thought they were going to Wembley, but it was hardly reverberating round Whaddon Road.
For all the sadness over the result, I felt strangely proud to be a Torquay fan, proud of my fellow fans, and proud of the effort our players put in and the loyalty and bond they have - particularly those regarded as our top assets who certainly don't seem too big for their boots - which all perhaps made it even a bit harder to take in a way.

3600 or so for a play off game is frankly crap, the armchair tufc fans would of already been saying, they will blow it they always do and each season they sell there best assets for next to nothing, they dont want to go up really. But the hardy of us go week in and week out hoping it will change,we have had two golden opportunities to get out of this division but didnt grab it,and with the likes of eunan and bobby more than likely disappearing up the m5 it wont be third time lucky

If that truly is the case with regards player budget we could be looking at a season of struggle especially if we lose the not so easily replaced core in Eunan Mark Ellis and Olly.
The squad was bear bones this last season and if were honest as well as having our fair share of good fortune with many results the players at least grafted for Lingy and ground then out.
That may or may not be enough next time around, time will tell of course but news like this is a bit hard to take after recent events when we are all hoping that our limited success can be built upon and we can go the next step and be genuine top of the table contenders.

What would you do now? :-/

Looks like the budget will be more or less the same so as usual spending sheds loads of cash is not an option. However, the new stand and 3 local derbies may see slightly higher crowds.

To get the ball rolling, I would like to see a young pacey winger like Bodin and a young central defender like McDonald , maybe on a season long loan, particularly if Ellis goes, in which case another defender is required. If we continue 4-3-3, maybe Atieno to deputise for Howe will be adequate. Always a juggling act, what do you think?

Eunan was my MoM last night, his first touch and all round control with the ball is superb. Getting out of the Pop-Side took quiet a time, why the exit into Marnham Road away end was closed "god-knows". ;)

Didnt realise Craig Easton has signed a pre contract. This from Wikepedia.

During May 2012, Easton agreed a year long contract with Torquay United to take place at the end of the season. The contract had already been signed and taken place, although Football League rules state that even players unattached to clubs may not play until the season is over, and thus only played for Torquay United's Reserve Team during the 2011/12 campaign. This is the second time he has played under manager Martin Ling, the first time being Leyton Orient.

Bobby and Eunan are surely destined for bigger things. As a club and for once we at least had the forethought to get them both under contract so hopefully the player and the club will benefit.
I thought Eunan was "on it" particularly in the first half last night. One drag back and shot which was somehow saved was just pure class. Lost his way a little in the second and seemed to be sitting deeper out on the right side when he should have been supporting and nearer Jarvis.
Our problem, as always is how do we build a squad to compete at the top.
A Eunan or a Bobby O just don't come along every five minutes at our level and when they show promise they will just get snapped up by the bigger fish and all the foundations and building work has to start all over. Realistically we need to build with more established experienced pros who wont attract the attention when we are having some success.
The big question for me now is can we improve on the past two seasons of play off finalist and semi finalists the danger is we could take a step back if lose any quality we have and fail to replace with similar.
Time will tell and next season will be very interesting and competetive with all three Devon clubs jockeying for the title of "Best team in Devon"

Wasn't meant to be, great first half when we could have scored 2 or 3 but faded second half. To be fair, we couldn't argue with their second goal. I hope we can keep the core of the squad for next season. I would say Jarvis would be a good addition but would try and off load mcphee, Atenio, macklin and leadbitter. Would love to think that bobby and eunan will stay but think that's unlikely, as long we get good money for them to bolster the squad. Another couple of attacking options to support Rene, maybe we can tempt Bodin back? There are going to be a lot of players out there looking for clubs, I'm ling has a good idea of what he needs next year.
Anyway, well done to everybody at the club for a great season, roll on the next!!

Shame it hasn't worked out for Chris - also he has another year to run on his contract, same as Leadbetter(?) and Macklin I think.
Unless we have offers etc then we then we will have them in next years squad.

I think we'll see minor tinkering.

Great if we could get hold of Marlon Pack, what a player.

Well it's nothing but a rollercoaster ride with Torquay is it !!! All in all a good season with limited resources. Think we will lose Eunan, Ellis and Bobby, heard a rumour Ipswich are after the latter.

So time to draft in a least two strikers, one midfield general and a centre back, and of course a new keeper if Bobby goes. I agree wholeheartedly with the posts above from Petef and James in that the Gods were against us and that we had nothing to threaten them. Our bench was woeful !!

Saah was MOM by a mile !!!

Time to rid ourselves of the deadwood, such as McPhee, Atieno, and the benchwarmers. Also get Danny to play as a winger and attack the fullback. So many times this year when Nico has the ball danny is stationary on the line waiting, he should be bombing on to a through ball, may time to show him the door, if he deosn't get the plot !!!!

Looking forward to the fixtures coming out though, all those local derbies and the nice new stand to enjoy

Congrats to ML, ST and the backroom staff and here's to another up and down, wacky but totally enjoyable season in 2012/13

Well, season over. Time to rebuild although more fine tuning than anything else. Contract talks to be held with out of contract players next week and we will find out then a bit more as to who will be staying or going.

There could be some interest in some players from other clubs although we have some protection in long contracts or under 24. After cobbling together a squad in record time last summer, Ling has a bit more time to develop the side and maybe balancing the side more will entail us seeing some favorites going.

Well, we gave it a good go and were very unlucky not to score in the first half. Probably left too much to do after the interval and conceding that all important first goal was the killer, particularly going in off the post again. >:(

The players gave it everything and can't fault their committment but it just wasn't meant to be. :( Ellis was MotM but thought Saah was a class act tonight and what a different player from the first few months of the season.

*puts positive cap on*

At least we didn't play badly tonight. We looked better going forward. Although we didn't take our chances, we did at least create some

A bit of strengthening and we may be up there again - as I said earlier this week (or was it last week?), we clearly have the core of a good side because that's two years in a row in the League play-offs, and 4 of the last 5 in the play-offs generally

I should imagine we'll lose Eunan but we'll get cash for him wherever he goes. I'm not placing too much hope in Nathan Craig yet as the last thing we need is a false Messiah. Wouldn't mind seeing the back of Ellis either as he's been a bit rubbish lately - Saah is clearly the class act at the back and has been virtually all season. A couple of centre-backs, a quick winger (Bodin as part of the O'Kane deal has been mooted) and Easton in midfield and I think we should do OK. I'm sure Ling's got some ideas

The problem is up front. OK, so we did win all those games when Howe was out over Christmas, but Atieno hasn't looked as good lately. Jarvis did OK tonight but OK isn't quite enough. I'd keep him on as a squad player, and the same for Atieno. But we do need another striker. Again, Cheltenham show that the best way to do this is to have options - Burgess, Spencer, Mohamed, Duffy and Goulding, all good strikers for this level

With O'Kane and Ellis presumably gone, that should free up some wages. I'd also add in McPhee as I'm not sure he's quite up to it at this level if we want to regularly challenge - he was what we needed at the time we signed him because we were expecting a transition season, but I don't think it's a coincidence that he has disappeared from the scene later on when we were towards the top. Also, if they aren't going to play, Halpin and Yeoman aren't worth keeping. Will be interesting to see what happens with Niall Thompson as he looked very good in the Man Utd game

I just hope Bobby stays. It'll be difficult to find someone as good as him if he does go. I can't imagine him going unless a Championship sides comes in for him, but there are 24 Championship sides out there. Plus there are a couple of others throwing around the cash at the moment which concerns me (*cough* Swindon *cough* Rotherham). I doubt he'll go anywhere to sit on the bench, though - he has already done that at Villa. He's too good for that

Though it would be easy to slip into pessimism, I think we're too good at this stage to be struggling big time next year, unless a lot of players leave and rash decisions are made by the board (and I'm sure they won't, because they're not daft). We have a good manager playing an effective way. There are a couple of dead-weights in the squad but it's the same for everyone. We can be pleased with this season, but just a bit disappointed it fell apart in the last 7 games

Deep fried in batter is best. ::)

The end of a tortuously successful season, a controdiction in terms perhaps but thats how I feel after tonight.
God it was hard lisrtening to their passionate and vocal supporters whilst we were quite as door mice obviously not believing we could turn it around.
When the footballing Gods are not on your side you just as well pack up and go home.
0-0 at half time was a crazy score line considering the near misses and attempts on target we had but as the realists amongst us predicted we just didn't have the cutting edge where it matters most or indeed the good fortune. This semi was lost six or seven weeks ago our form tailed off and the long arduous season had taken its toll on many of the players most of whom had started every match. No squad rotation we had success for most of the season with our first eleven with little in reserve. All in all and considering how many players Lingy used it has been and exceptional effort but also so disappointing .
The bigger questions will soon have to be answered and will we be able to build on this and improve a notch or two or will the squad be torn apart once again, Eunan Bobby and Mark Ellis the obvious candidates , basically the core of our success.

Holliday next up , Euros and then Olympics. Hey lifes not so bad. :-*

I've backed Ling since Day 1 but that goal is his fault for the last sub. He shouldn't have changed the defence, as awful as Ellis has been

Jarvis up front, Stevens back on the wing. Atieno stays on the bench

Also intriguing to see Yeoman on the bench ahead of McPhee

Football is a funnny old game, all the noises are coming from Cheltenum (Wembley) but its going to be a night to remember at Plainmoor tonight, hold on to to seats if you are sat on Bristows Bench! If Eintracht Frankfurt can manage to get promoted into the Bundesliga next season then anything is possible!

A nice early goal can turn this tie around on its head and if we do get one, then there is every chance we can go and win. Do we have three goals in us? On paper maybe not, but then we all know that any thing can and does happen in football.

I cant see there being a bumper crowd tonight as some fans might just feel the game is already over and we have no chance at all of turning things around. We have all seen many great comebacks in our time watching this wonderful game and who knows, this could be one of them.

To not make it through to Wembley would be a second disappointment the fans of this great club would have suffered this season, but fans should not forget to even be challenging at the top of the table, is a major achievement for such a small poorly supported club.

I say poorly and only mean at home games as our travelling fans do the club very proud and in my view apart from a few idiots, are the best behaved fans in all the land. So a big well done to them and also all the fans who have managed to get to home games and I only wish my circumstances were different, as I would so love to be standing on the popside with you all.

What will be will be, I only hope no matter what the result, I read on here later the players gave their all, that is all that can be asked of them and expected by those who have paid good money to attend games and given the lads their full support during the games.

Here is hoping the right result that will put our team one step closer to promotion, I still feel inside its going to happen this season and wont give up hope until there is nothing left to hope for.

Good luck lads, you have done this club proud already this season and will some real grit and determination and just a little slice of luck, you may just pull off the impossible.

I have spoken to quite a few people genuinely excited about the match tonight and as football fans this is something that we should look forward to as opposed be fearful of. It is not as if we are trying to stay up in the league.

Of course after the first leg we go more in hope than expectation but with some faith in the lads and a bit of Cheltenham charity defending then who knows what will happen. ;)

Oh I'm not sure I'd interpret it like that Ferret, in fact we'd like to see even more people supporting the team, & Plainmoor filled to the rafters tonight cheering on the lads, as I think that would help our chances of success.

But realistically it is beginning to look as though such an important match may not be a sell out, & there's little harm done by discussing why that may be.

Enjoy the match tonight....& I thought you summed up cricket very well ;)

Does anybody actually support the club?

I think live tv doesn't help

The fact that the game's on TV, plus the warning given by the club that some of those who do turn up might have their view of the game 'impaired' by scaffolding, might have lead us to believe that in order to get the all important backing of a large number of home fans, a slight decrease in price would be a sensible solution.

However I learn that those who do forsake the comfort of their armchairs & the TV & instead attempt to peer between the 'Sky' scaffolding' to view the game will find that the prices have been bumped up to 18 tonight.

Been a while but anyway, anyone know of Internet coverage for tonight, picture or even audio? Cannot get bbc as "rights reserved". Waterford Ireland is where I am. Live in the sticks and dont have Sky Sports so a bit buggered tbh.

Any info welcome.

I see on the OS that we are still going to play with a lone striker! Oh well, I suppose it's best to stick to a formation that's got us a shit load of goals this season! ;D

Really don't think we have the players to change it much Danny will come in and "not" play as a conventional winger and we have no genuine right sided threat who can beat a wide defender and get a decent cross in. Maklin could have been a contender but that now looks an impossibility for whatever reason.
Do we have any forward in the squad to scare their defence?
Its worth remebering when we did have a real threat in Billy Bodin we looked a much better package up top.
Also interesting to see that Billy doesnt even get a start for Crewe which demonstrates how good their young squad is. :-/

The answer to the highlighted question is NO! Surely though, if we can't scare them with quality, we must scare them with quantity!

It would have been a 2-2 in front of a crowd of barely 1,000.

Still can't crack this table business. ???

22/12/84 H v Southend United D 2 - 2 1,022 Anderson, Laryea
06/11/85 H v Southend United D 2 - 2 1,070 Loram, Crabbe

Jon, that's a lovely table around your date. Next step is to fill in some lines between your columns:

22/12/84 H v Southend United D 2-2 1,022 Anderson, Laryea
6/11/85 H v Southend United D 2-2 1,070 Loram, Crabbe

Your spreadsheet dataset will have a column of data, then a column of coding, then a column of data, then a column of coding etc. Don't forget to /tr at the end of each row.

Don't think Cheltenham will be playing an open game like we did on Sunday. I really think we got that wrong on Sunday in a first leg where it is so important not to concede.
More than likely five across the middle to suffocate and frustrate our midfield and rely on us committing forward to catch us on the break with their tricky and speedy wing men.
I just don't think we will have enough to break them down and score two or three without conceding. It would be a disaster for them to let their two goal advantage slip. Their confidence will be sky high whilst our s has been knocked back of late the players should feel no pressure as most of us believe the tie is lost anyway.
We need nine or ten at there very best tonight to stand a chance and perhaps some Ex Lax in the Cheltenham players pre match drinks!
An interesting game of chess awaits.
